He repeated the claim on August 12, 2020: "making ventilators that nobody else could have done. We are the ventilator king of the world." PolitiFact named "coronavirus downplay and denial" its 2020 Lie of the Year. By the time he left office on January 20, 2021, the U.S. was averaging just under 3,100 COVID-19 deaths a day, with 4,383 deaths recorded on inauguration day.
