What the record showed
Pew Research Center's post-election analysis (November 9, 2016) found that the final round of national polls showed Clinton leading by 1 to 7 points and that, across the board, polls underestimated Trump's support; forecasters had put Clinton's chances at 70% to 99%. Pew reported "a great deal of speculation but no clear answers as to the cause of the disconnect," and did not attribute the misses to dishonest polling.
