What happened
In a string of tweets on July 27, 2019, Trump attacked Cummings, who had criticized conditions at border detention facilities at a July 18 hearing. He also wrote that the district was 'the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there.' The tweets followed a Fox News segment on the district. Cummings replied that he goes home to his district daily; Mayor Jack Young and Maryland leaders condemned the remarks. Trump doubled down on July 28, calling Cummings 'racist' and saying 'There is nothing racist in stating plainly what most people already know,' and on Aug. 1 told reporters 'what happened in Baltimore is disgraceful. And it's not only Baltimore, it's other Democrat-run cities.'
