“Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. We have no choice. We have no choice. According to Pew Research, among others, there is a great hatred toward Americans by large segments of the Muslim population.”

What happened
The proposal came five days after the San Bernardino shooting. Republican rivals objected: Jeb Bush called Trump 'unhinged,' and Ted Cruz said 'that is not my policy,' according to AP. On January 27, 2017, a week into his term, Trump signed Executive Order 13769. It suspended refugee admissions, barred Syrian refugees indefinitely, and paused entry from seven Muslim-majority countries. At the signing he said he was 'establishing new vetting measures to keep radical Islamic terrorists out.' After two revisions, the Supreme Court upheld a third version in Trump v. Hawaii (June 2018).
