What happened
At the G7 summit on June 16, 2025, a reporter asked Trump why he was waiting to sanction Russia. He said, "Because I'm waiting to see whether or not a deal is done," and said of European plans for more sanctions, "Let's see them do it first." Earlier that day he opened a meeting with Canada's prime minister by saying that removing Russia from the G8 was "a mistake." Trump left the summit early on June 16, before Zelensky arrived, and the summit ended the next day with no joint statement in support of Ukraine, the Kyiv Independent reported. Canada announced new sanctions on Russia and a $2 billion military aid package for Ukraine. On July 14 Trump threatened "secondary tariffs" of about 100% if there was no deal within 50 days and announced that NATO countries would buy U.S. weapons for Ukraine.
