What happened
In an interview taped at Mar-a-Lago on March 28, 2022, and aired March 29, Trump cited a 2020 Senate report that Yelena Baturina, wife of Moscow's then-mayor, had paid $3.5 million to a firm co-founded by Hunter Biden, and said Putin 'should release' whatever he knew about it. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine was then in its fifth week. CNN reported that it was not clear any such material existed or that the Kremlin had access to it, that no evidence had emerged that the Bidens engaged in corruption or influenced U.S. policy for personal gain, and that Hunter Biden, then under a Justice Department investigation into his business dealings, had denied wrongdoing. The request echoed Trump's July 2016 'Russia, if you're listening' appeal for Hillary Clinton's emails.
