What happened
Trump posted the statement on March 3, 2025, after Zelensky said the end of the war could be "very, very far away." That evening a White House official said Trump had ordered a pause on shipments of U.S. military aid, covering all equipment not yet inside Ukraine, until he determined Zelensky was committed to peace talks. On March 5, national security adviser Mike Waltz and CIA Director John Ratcliffe indicated that intelligence sharing had also been paused. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov welcomed the decision, and a Polish foreign ministry spokesperson said European and NATO allies had not been informed in advance. Asked on March 7 whether Putin was taking advantage of the pause, Trump said, "No, I actually think he's doing what anybody else would do." On March 11, after Ukraine accepted a U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire at talks in Jeddah, the United States said it would immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance.
