What happened
On February 24, 2025, the third anniversary of the invasion, the United States voted against a Ukrainian resolution, backed by European countries, in the UN General Assembly that demanded an immediate withdrawal of Russian troops. The resolution passed 93-18 with 65 abstentions. The BBC reported that the U.S. voted the same way as Russia, North Korea and Belarus. A rival U.S. draft mourned the loss of life and called for a swift end to the conflict without mentioning Russian aggression; after European amendments were added, the U.S. abstained on its own text. The Security Council later adopted the original U.S. wording 10-0, with five abstentions, including Britain and France. Asked that day to explain the votes, Trump gave the answer quoted above.
