What happened
Trump declared a public health emergency on October 26, 2017. Overdose deaths topped 70,000 in 2017, dipped slightly in 2018, then hit a record above 70,000 in 2019 and about 93,000 in 2020 according to CDC provisional data. NPR reported in October 2020 that the epidemic had never been worse.
