What happened
An executive order promised housing for 6,000 veterans at a new National Center for Warrior Independence on the West LA VA campus, but the April 2026 budget request included zero dollars to build any of that housing. The administration instead pursued encampment removal, civil commitment and a VA-DOJ arrangement letting officials seek legal guardianship over 'vulnerable' veterans — an approach the National Homelessness Law Center said takes rights away rather than providing housing.
