What happened
Mexico never contributed money for the barrier. Construction was funded by U.S. appropriations plus roughly $10 billion diverted from Defense Department accounts after Trump declared a national emergency in February 2019. By January 2021 about 452 miles of barrier had been built, of which roughly 40 miles was in locations where no barrier previously existed.
