What the record showed

Three days later, at the G7 summit in Biarritz, France, Trump said, "President Xi is a great leader, who happens to be a brilliant man," and, "I have great respect, and I like him too." Asked at the closing news conference whether it was a strategy "to call President Xi an enemy one day" and say relations were very good the next, Trump replied, "It's the way I negotiate." At the Phase One signing on January 15, 2020, Trump called Xi "a very, very good friend of mine."
