Said China would "eat Canada alive" and threatened a 100% tariff over a Canada-China deal
“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a "Drop Off Port" for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life. If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.”

Eight days earlier, asked about the agreement Canada had just signed in Beijing, Trump said, "it's a good thing for him to sign a trade deal. If you can get a deal with China, you should do that." That agreement lowered Canadian tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in return for lower Chinese import taxes on Canadian farm products. Prime Minister Mark Carney said on January 25 that Canada had "no intention" of pursuing a free trade deal with China. In May 2026 Trump made his own state visit to Beijing, where the White House announced Chinese purchase commitments and new U.S.-China boards of trade and investment.
