What the record showed
On May 13, 2018, President Trump wrote that he and Xi were 'working together to give massive Chinese phone company, ZTE, a way to get back into business, fast. Too many jobs in China lost.' On June 7, 2018, the Commerce Department announced a settlement replacing its denial order against ZTE with a $1 billion penalty and $400 million in escrow. On June 29, 2019, after what he called 'a great meeting with President Xi,' Trump wrote: 'At the request of our High Tech companies, and President Xi, I agreed to allow Chinese company Huawei to buy product from them.'
