Said he talked many countries out of using Huawei because it is 'a big security risk'
“We confronted untrustworthy Chinese technology and telecom providers. We convinced many countries—many countries—and I did this myself, for the most part—not to use Huawei, because we think it's an unsafe security risk. It's a big security risk. I talked many countries out of using it. If they want to do business with us, they can't use it.”

A year earlier, on June 29, 2019, after meeting Xi Jinping in Osaka, he said he had agreed 'pretty easily' to let American companies keep selling products to Huawei. In May 2020 the United States introduced sanctions aimed at Huawei's chip supply. On July 14, 2020 the United Kingdom said its mobile providers could not buy new Huawei 5G equipment after December 31 and had to remove Huawei 5G kit by 2027; the BBC reported the decision followed the U.S. sanctions. Huawei denies that it poses a national security threat.
