What the record showed
In the same interview he said of Xi Jinping, 'He's a great gentleman.' He repeated the claim in an August 26, 2020 tweet ('China would own our Country'), in his August 27 convention speech and at a September 7 news conference. Biden won the election, kept the Section 301 tariffs on Chinese goods and on May 14, 2024 raised them on $18 billion of imports, including an increase from 25% to 100% on electric vehicles. Census Bureau figures show the U.S. goods deficit with China was $352.8 billion in 2021, $382.3 billion in 2022, $279.6 billion in 2023 and $297.0 billion in 2024.
