Pledges to revoke China's trade status and phase out essential imports in four years

He introduced the pledge as a plan "to completely eliminate dependence on China in all critical areas." A Senate bill to revoke China's permanent normal trade relations status, S. 206, was introduced on Jan. 23, 2025; its official summary describes that status as current law. U.S. goods imports from China were $308.7 billion in 2025, down from $440.3 billion in 2024, according to Census Bureau data. After Xi Jinping's state visit in September 2026, the two governments released lists of products for tariff cuts; China's commerce ministry said more than 90% of them would be subject to "most-favored-nation" rates, the Associated Press reported.
