What happened

He had said at a Jan. 2, 2019 Cabinet meeting, of withdrawing from Syria, "I'm the only one that can do that and get bad publicity." His administration signed the Feb. 29, 2020 Doha agreement with the Taliban, and on Nov. 17, 2020 acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller announced the Afghanistan force would be halved to 2,500 by mid-January 2021. The war did not end on his watch: about 2,500 U.S. troops remained in Afghanistan when he left office, and the withdrawal was completed under Biden on Aug. 30, 2021.
