What happened
The ceasefire took effect January 19, 2025 with three 42-day phases; Hamas released 33 hostages in phase one. Israel halted aid on March 2 after the phase-one extension dispute and on March 18, 2025 launched surprise airstrikes, with Netanyahu saying Israel had "resumed combat in full force." A new ceasefire took effect October 10, 2025, but phase-two talks were deadlocked as of May 2026, more than 1,060 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks after the truce began, and Hamas dissolved its civil administration on July 6, 2026.
