What happened
He repeated the pledge through the campaign, including at a Hannity town hall in Harrisburg, Pa. on September 4, 2024 ("We won't have World War III when I'm elected") and in Georgia on September 25, 2024. On February 28, 2026 the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran, opening a war that saw a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire on April 8, 2026, an Islamabad Memorandum on June 17, and a collapse of the ceasefire on July 8, 2026. Addressing the UN on September 22, 2026, in the war's seventh month, Trump said he could "annihilate the Islamic Republic" or make a deal after the midterms. The Russia-Ukraine war also continued into its fifth year as of September 2026.
