What the record showed
In the same interview he refused to say what tax rate he paid, calling it "none of your business," and he did not release his returns during the campaign. He repeated the claim on October 2, 2016 ("I know our complex tax laws better than anyone"), his campaign said he "knows the tax code far better than anyone who has ever run for President," and in a December 2017 New York Times interview he said, "I know the details of taxes better than anybody. Better than the greatest C.P.A." He had also told ABC on May 9, 2016 that "nobody knows more about taxes than I do."
