What happened

He revived the framing in his Aug. 27, 2020 acceptance speech: "if we don't win, your Second Amendment doesn't have a chance." The one major federal gun restriction of his term was his own: after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting his administration issued a December 2018 ATF rule (83 Fed. Reg. 66514) reclassifying bump stocks as machine guns and banning them. The Supreme Court struck that rule down on June 14, 2024 in Garland v. Cargill, holding ATF had exceeded its statutory authority.
