What happened
Asked by Kaitlan Collins whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war, Trump said he did not 'think in terms of winning and losing'; asked again whether he wanted Ukraine or Russia to win, he said 'I want everybody to stop dying. They're dying. Russians and Ukrainians, I want them to stop dying.' He said he would have the war 'settled in one day, 24 hours' and that Europe should 'put up more money.' Asked whether Putin, for whom the International Criminal Court had issued an arrest warrant in March 2023, was a war criminal, he said it 'should be discussed later' because 'if you say he's a war criminal, it's going to be a lot tougher to make a deal to get this thing stop.' He called Putin 'a smart guy' who 'made a tremendous mistake.' The United States had provided about $36.9 billion in military aid to Ukraine since February 2022, according to CNN.
