What happened
On April 24, 2025, a reporter asked Trump what concessions Russia had offered to get closer to peace, and he gave the answer quoted above. Hours earlier a Russian missile and drone attack had killed 12 people in Kyiv, and Trump had written on Truth Social, "Vladimir, STOP!" In the same Oval Office session, a reporter noted that Ukraine had agreed to the U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire two months earlier and Russia had not. Trump said getting Crimea back for Ukraine was "going to be a very difficult thing to do." He also said, "we're putting a lot of pressure" on Russia. On April 26 he wrote that Putin might be "just tapping me along" and raised the possibility of "Banking" or "Secondary Sanctions."
