What happened
August 8, 2025 was the day the shortened deadline he had set for Putin to agree to a ceasefire ran out. Instead of the new sanctions he had threatened, he announced that he would meet Putin in Alaska on August 15 and, asked whether Zelensky would have to give up territory, said there would be 'some swapping of territories to the betterment of both.' Ukraine and its European allies had long rejected ceding occupied land, while Putin had insisted any deal require Ukraine to relinquish territory seized since 2014. On August 11 he added that Zelensky 'needs approval to do a land swap' and that 'there will be some land swapping going on.' Two days earlier, on August 6, he had imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on India over its purchases of Russian oil, the only new economic penalty tied to the deadline.
