What happened

Reversed inside two weeks. After an August 20, 2019 phone call with NRA chief Wayne LaPierre, Trump said on August 20-21 that 'we have very, very strong background checks right now' and warned of a 'slippery slope,' pivoting to mental health and noting that 'a lot of the people that put me where I am are strong believers in the Second Amendment.' No background-check legislation was ever advanced; House-passed bills died in the Senate. He had made and abandoned a near-identical promise after Parkland in February 2018.
