What happened
Within a month of taking office the White House was already walking the pledge back; by February 2025 Trump publicly abandoned the idea of an immediate rollback in prices. Inflation reaccelerated after the April 2025 'Liberation Day' tariffs, reaching roughly 3% in 2025, and the Senate Joint Economic Committee and outside analysts estimated households paid about $2,120 more in 2025 because of it. In his 2026 State of the Union Trump claimed he had 'won' on affordability while grocery, electricity, housing and medical prices all remained above January 2025 levels.
