What happened
MS NOW noted this was the rare specific, checkable promise Trump almost never makes. Prices went the other way: regular gasoline hit a record $4.15 a gallon over Labor Day weekend 2026, up 30% year over year, and reached $4.29 by mid-September 2026. Trump shifted to framing $3 gas as an acceptable cost of the Iran war. At an Oct. 5, 2026 rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, he called war-driven fuel prices 'artificial' and 'a small price to pay for keeping the world safe,' then said of Iran: 'Let ’em take out Los Angeles, let ’em take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay.'
