Within 24 hours of Pfizer's December 11, 2020 authorization the government began releasing 6.4 million doses in two stages, not tens of millions. Pfizer had already cut its 2020 manufacturing projection from 100 million to 50 million doses. About 2.8 million people had been vaccinated in the US by December 31, 2020, against a stated goal of 20 million.
