What happened

At the Jan. 15, 2020 signing of the U.S.-China Phase One agreement he said of the deal, "Nobody else could have done that, right?" Under Phase One, China committed to buy an additional $200 billion of U.S. goods and services over 2020-2021; it purchased only 58% of what it committed to, according to the Peterson Institute for International Economics. The overall U.S. trade deficit rose 36.3% between 2016 and 2020, to nearly $654 billion.
