What happened
He repeated it on CNN's New Day on May 9, 2016: "I'm the only one that can do anything about trade." In office he withdrew from the TPP, renegotiated NAFTA as the USMCA and imposed tariffs on China, but the U.S. trade deficit in goods and services rose 36.3% from 2016 to 2020, to nearly $654 billion, per FactCheck.org's compilation of Census Bureau data. China bought only 58% of the additional U.S. goods and services it committed to under the January 2020 Phase One deal.
