FactCheck.org found in August 2019 that steel and iron mill employment rose by 4,500 (5.6 percent) between January 2017 and June 2019 to 85,300, still 16 percent below the May 2007 level, and that his claim that no new mill had been built in 30 years was "completely wrong" (23 new mills since 1989). U.S. Steel restarted a blast furnace in March 2018 but announced plans to idle furnaces and an Indiana plant in fall 2019.
