What happened
PolitiFact's Jan. 20, 2026 one-year review found groceries and clothing each up almost 2% year over year, electricity up nearly 7%, and housing, medical care, tuition and child care all up about 3%. The New York Times found beef up 16.4%, coffee up 19.8% and lettuce up 7.3%, with the largest monthly grocery jump (0.7%) since August 2022. Households were projected to absorb another $1,300 in added costs in 2026, up from $1,000 in 2025.
